Action regulation and rebuilding

Every piano has what is called an Action, which is simply the mechanism that allows you to play your piano. The parts included are the keys, keyframe and part stack. To complete the system you also have the dampers and pedals, together all these components allow you to create the beautiful sounds and music on your piano. A piano action is mostly made of parts from wood, felt, metal and leather. Over the years these components naturally get used or the materials may undergo shrinkage or swelling and therefore need to be maintained, adjusted and/or replaced. Action regulation/rebuilding is a key ingredient to a healthy piano and if expertly done will have a huge impact on your piano’s touch, playability, ease of play, key and hammer repetition, and produce many other technical advantages.

Voicing

Tuning alone has no effect on the tonal quality of a piano. With use, the felt on piano hammers become both grooved and compacted from continually striking the metal strings. The deterioration of your piano's tone may be very gradual, consequently your piano technician can offer the best advice as to the necessity of voicing (sometimes called tone regulation). The voicing procedure includes sanding the hammers to restore correct hammer surface and shape, plus the insertion of needles of various sizes into the hammer felt in order to change their elasticity. Voicing is an art that should be undertaken only by piano technicians with considerable skill and experience. Correctly performed, voicing a piano will create the proper blend of volume and harmonic content for each tone that will ensure both playing and listening pleasure.
